Autumn Term 2017
Welcome back to school. Hopefully you are all well rested and ready to work hard. The class will be taught on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday by Mrs Young and on Thursday and Friday by Mrs Parker.
Miss Wells will be helping us out at various times during the week supporting in Maths and Literacy.
We have lots of exciting activities planned for the new school year.
Veni Vidi Dedici (I came, I saw, I learned)
Our topic for this term is The Romans. We will be looking at “Life before the Romans”, “Who were the Romans”, “The Roman Invasion of Britain”, “What the Romans gave us”. We will use material from our topic in Writing, Guided Reading, Geography, History, Art (Mosaics) and Design Technology (Chariot Building).
Maths will cover place value, addition and subtraction and then multiplication and division. We will be encouraging the children to use apparatus whenever possible, to increase the depth of their understanding and to promote independence. Times tables will be a priority and we will be working hard on learning the 4x table, 8x table, 3x table and 6x table. We would very much appreciate any help at home with learning these multiplication tables. Times tables Rock Stars will be available to the children again this year also.
English - Writing
In Literacy this term we will be working with the book Varjak Paw by SF Said, through this text and our Topic we will be looking at narrative writing and both chronological and non-chronological reports. Through Science the children will also be learning to write explanation texts. Each week there will be a discrete grammar lesson and spelling lesson. Spellings will be sent home to learn on a weekly basis and there will be a brief test the following week. There will also be tips of how to help your child learn their spellings with a range of techniques to try.
Guided reading will also occur daily where children will work on skills such as comprehension, inference and deduction. All the children have a login for Accelerated Reader and have done a test to assess their current reading and comprehension levels. The children will need to pick books to read within their calculated reading range and complete a comprehension test on each. We would encourage children to read for fifteen minutes every day to ensure they reach their reading target for the term (and also to help encourage a love of books and reading). It is also helpful if the children can fill in their reading records each time they read and for parents to do the same whenever they hear their child read.
This term we will begin by learning all about sound and hearing. After half term we will study light. We will be investigating these topics through performing experiments as often as possible as well as learning different ways to record and display our findings.
In R.E. this term we will be studying Islam and prayer. We will be looking at where and when Muslims pray and similarities and differences to Christianity. Towards the end of the autumn term our focus will shift towards Christmas and the Christian stories and traditions associated with it.
P.E. lessons will mostly be taught by Premier Sport. The lessons will take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays but it is useful for PE kit to stay in school throughout the week. Please ensure your child has shorts and a t-shirt for indoor PE and jogging bottoms and trainers for outdoor PE. Long hair should be tied back and earrings removed.
Music and French
Madam Bending will be teaching French and music in Kestrel Class. The lessons will alternate, one week French being taught and the following week music will be the focus. She has some exciting ideas which I am sure will excite the children and hopefully end in a small performance.
In ICT/Computing will continue to improve the children’s logical thinking/problem solving and improve their programming skills. We will also continue to look at various elements of e-safety ensuring that the children know how to keep themselves safe online.
This terms artwork will mostly be based around our topic of The Romans and we will be making Roman Shields and covering Mosaics looking at the Artist Antoni Gaudi.
In addition to their 15 minutes reading per night the children will receive spelling and grammar homework each week along with a maths activity. Each half term there will be an extended project for the children to complete at home. This half terms project will be Science based and next half terms will be related to our topic of The Romans.
If you have any questions about this terms activities or how you can further support your child in their studies please speak to either of us or email us via the school office email@example.com
